You've heard it from every corner of this industry, and if it never sat right with you, I want to tell you… I’m right there with you.
For the first fifteen years of my career I shot weddings. And families. And engagements, bridals, newborns, maternity, boudoir, seniors, events, headshots, still for films, and product.
All of it. At the same time.
I was told constantly that this was a mistake… that I was diluting my brand, confusing my audience, leaving money on the table by refusing to specialize. Every pro and educator I could find was screaming “pick a niche!!”… you can’t do it all!!
But I did, and I loved every minute of it. And it built a six-figure business in the process.
Then, I changed lanes entirely… I stopped shooting weddings completely, and the following year was my biggest year ever.
Today I shoot branding, headshots, and commercial - and that's it.
Two completely different strategies. Both of them right.

I've been a professional photographer since 2007.
I built a six-figure business in Austin that spanned nineteen years… in a highly competitive and deeply saturated market.
In 2022 I made the incredibly scary decision to quit weddings which made up 70% of my total revenue at the time. The year after I shot my last wedding… I had my biggest year ever.
Then in 2025 I decided to make the biggest change of them all… I sold my house in Austin, packed up me and my pups, and moved to Greenville, South Carolina, where not a single person had heard my name. No client list. No reputation. No referral network. Nothing but twenty years of knowing how to do this.
Five months in, and I was back to earning 75% of what I usually made in a month in Austin.
I did all of it by myself. No partner, no second income, no financial help from anyone. Every decision landed on me and every slow month did too.
Twenty years in, and I'm still not
doing it the way everyone else said.
I'm not going to tell you niching is wrong. It’s working really well for me at this point in my career.
What I'll tell you is this:
You don't have to niche early… or ever.
Shooting everything for fifteen years didn't ruin my business. It taught me what I liked, what I was good at, what drained me, and what I'd want to be doing in ten or twenty years. You cannot learn those things from a spreadsheet. You learn them by shooting a lot of different things and paying attention.
And the lane you pick isn't permanent.
That's the part almost nobody says out loud. The industry sells niching like a door that locks behind you - one decision, made early, that you either got right or will quietly regret for a decade.
It isn't. I've changed direction a couple times now. Once by dropping a genre that was most of my income. Once by selling my house and moving to a state where nobody had heard my name.
Both times, everyone thought I was making a mistake. Both times, the business not only survived… it got better.
What I actually believe…
You are allowed to change your mind about your own career. In the middle of it. After it's already working. That's not a failure of planning. That's just what a long-term career actually looks like from the inside.
IF YOU’RE THE ONE WHO NEVER FIT…
Maybe you've been told to pick one thing and it has never once felt natural.
Maybe you're good at four genres and tired of apologizing for it.
Maybe you built the niche exactly like they said, and it worked, and now you're stuck inside something you don't want anymore… and leaving feels less like a decision and more like a confession.
Maybe you're just quietly wondering if it's too late to do this differently.
It isn't. I know that's the thing everyone says. So here's why I'd believe it if I were you: I'm not telling you it's possible from the other side of a finished story. I'm in the middle of one right now. Still rebuilding, still figuring parts of it out, still having months that don't go how I planned.
I just happen to have done it enough times to know the ground holds.
And, if you’re doing it on your own…
There's a version of this that nobody writes about, and it's the version where you're the only income.
No second salary absorbing a slow quarter. Nobody to talk it through with at eleven at night who actually has skin in it. No one who can say "we'll be fine" with real math behind it.
Every decision lands on you. So does every slow month, every unexpected expense, and every 2am calculation about how long you can go before this becomes a problem.
I know that one well. I've never had a partner to share the financial weight. I bought my house by myself, built the business by myself, decided to drop weddings by myself, and decided to sell that house and move across the country by myself.
And when I went looking for someone who'd done what I was about to do, almost every story I found had a partner somewhere in the background. A spouse's salary. Family money. Someone splitting the risk.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with any of that. It just wasn't my situation, and I couldn't map from it.
So if you're carrying this alone… whether you always have, or whether you're newly figuring out how - I want to be clear about two things.
It is possible.
I'm doing it. You can too.
And the plan has to be built for just you... A bigger cushion. Slower moves. Safety nets you set up deliberately instead of assuming. It isn't the same math as everyone else's.
